Hobbies + why they are so important

Family, Lifestyle, SPORTS

in childhood through adulthood

"Okay everyone, let's go around and share our favorite hobby." There is a palpable shift in the room as everyone quickly tries to think of a shareable response. Invariably the first person to be called on will sheepishly look around the room and say "uh... Netflix..?" everyone chuckles and the circle moves on. In a new group of people, there will usually be at least a few that actually do have a hobby. Have you ever watched a person's face light up when they talk about something they are passionate about? It's a wonderful thing. In this age of convenience foods, binge-worthy shows on demand, and a never ending to-do list that we all have; it is so easy to fall into the void of not taking time to actually DO something.

Here are some reasons why I think it is SO IMPORTANT to find something we are passionate about, and a few ideas to get you going.

  • People that make time to spend on a hobby are happier. There is NOTHING like the feeling of mastering that guitar solo you've been practicing, or baking that perfect lemon meringue pie, or nailing that yoga pose you've been after. Personal satisfaction and pride is such an underrated emotion in our culture today. It is so powerful though, and can bring you real confidence throughout your day.
  • When you take time to meet up with others who share your same interests, you have the opportunity to make the best friends. These are "your people". I would say the lion share of friends I have made since becoming an adult have come from various CrossFit gyms I have trained at or yoga studios I practice in. This type of community is invaluable.
  • Hobbies can be an excellent way to utilize your time to give back. Whether you are knitting baby caps for preemies in your local NICU, or baking cookies for a senior home, there are so many ways to share your talent and your passions with your community around you.
  • Children that have hobbies are less likely to spend most of their time on screens, and more likely to have healthy social lives. Think about the confidence you gain from mastering a skill. That confidence is invaluable to growing children and teenagers.

Don't think you have the time to start a hobby?

  • Think again! I encourage you to head over to your local craft store (Don't forget to google for a coupon first- the stores that I frequent almost ALWAYS have 40-50% 0ff coupons) Take a quick walk down the aisles and see if anything sparks your interest. Pottery making, woodburning, sewing, crocheting, building model airplanes, the possibilities are endless. Crafting is a great stress reliever, and it is so much fun to refine your skills over time.
  • Hop over to your local YMCA or Recreation Center and take a peek at what they offer. Maybe you can join a basketball league or rediscover your childhood love for swimming.
  • This last recommendation is what I most highly suggest. I would love to challenge you to find a local yoga studio and sign up for their trial. I can't even express how much yoga changed my life - it's way more than a hobby, but it's a wonderful hobby to start. Improved mood, focus, fitness, are just a few benefits you will receive from a steady yoga practice. Don't feel too shy to go in either - there is no judgment in yoga. It's yoga practice - not yoga perfect. Namaste!

A new hobby

Here are some super sweet photographs of my son and his Uncle. His Uncle is a hockey player, and he offered to take my son for his first ice skating experience to get him excited about potentially playing too. I think you can see in the photos how much it meant to my son and how he loved it.

As one last aside - I want to recommend - IF YOU HAVE A HOBBY, SHARE IT! Especially with little ones around you. It is SO meaningful and can ignite a lifelong passion for the hobby.
